A General History of The Robberies and Murders of The Most Notorious Pyrates (1724)"We do not doubt but the World will be curious to know the Original and Progress of these Desperadoes, who were the Terror of the trading Part of the World." -A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates (1724).

A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates, often shortened to A General History of the Pyrates, is a book written in 1724 by Captain Charles Johnson. The two-volume book was published in Britain and contains information and stories about many of the pirates that were famous at the time and would later go on to become legends. The book had a heavy influence on later pirate-themed literature and media, and some say it responsible for pirate stereotypes, such as peg legs and eye patches, and burying treasure. Interestingly, it is generally accepted that Captain Charles Johnson was a pseudonym, and nobody knows the true authorship of the book, although a few historians have some ideas. Although it seems that "Johnson" embellished some details a bit, especially in the second volume, the stories contained within match other historical records from the time, so the book is considered to be an excellent contemporary resource regarding piracy.
